Alzheimer's disease

This is the most common cause of dementia. The brain is made up of billions of nerve cells that connect to each other. In Alzheimer’s disease, connections between these cells are lost. This is because proteins build up and form abnormal structures called ‘plaques’ and ‘tangles’. Eventually nerve cells die and brain tissue is lost.

This type of dementia is caused by damage to the vessels that supply blood to your brain. The most common signs of vascular dementia include difficulties with problem-solving, slowed thinking, and loss of focus and organisation. These tend to be more noticeable than memory loss

Young-onset dementia

Lewy bodies are abnormal balloon like clumps of protein that have been found in the brains of people with Lewy body dementia, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Common signs and symptoms include acting out one's dreams in sleep, seeing things that aren't there (visual hallucinations), and problems with focus and attention.

Young-onset dementia

There are around 900,000 people in the UK living with dementia, and the likelihood of developing dementia increases significantly with age. When a person develops dementia before the age of 65, this is known as ‘young-onset dementia’. Over 42,000 people in the UK are living with young-onset dementia (and are often referred to as ‘younger people with dementia’).
